If you don't already know, I absolutely love trying out new hair products, especially hair tools. So when iFabbo featured the Voloom Volumizing Iron, I immediately signed up to review it! Obviously I've seen lots of products but this one was not like one I've seen before. It initially reminded me of a crimping iron, but this one has a square grid pattern that creates a wave of volume in the hair.
The outside packaging is fair, as I don't think the graphics on the box are the greatest, but when I opened the box up, the iron is pearly white and comes with a little bag of three hair clips, a teasing brush and a very sturdy holder that is insulated to handle the heat. The clips looked really weird and bend on the top with little tabs on the bottom! I was most intrigued at first with the clips, as I always have problems with clips staying in place when I clip large sections of my hair up. After using the clips, they are absolutely my favorite clips ever! I want to order more clips!

The Voloom Volumizing Iron is constructed very nice, with a digital LED temperature display, auto-matic 30 minute shut off (for OCD's like me!), ceramic coated plates to help smooth the cuticle of the hair, a locking mechanism that will keep the iron closed and plates protected when it is not in use, and best of all a super fast heat-up. I usually crank my hair tools up, as hot as they will go, as I have very coarse and heavy hair, but I decided to put this one at 370° instead of 390° and it worked perfectly.
The square grid creates something like a undefined, beveled wave that in turn creates the volume in the hair. The instructions are to pull up the top layers of your hair and only use the Voloom at the roots of the layers underneath. As you can see in the animation above it creates volume and it creates it fast. I used the teasing brush and a tiny bit of my Laid Brand hairspray to boost it up, but it didn't take much effort at all.

Since I'm horrible at following directions, I went ahead and started experimenting with all of my hair. I ended up creating two very, quick hairstyles that aren't polished in the video, but just to show how easy this iron creates volume. My findings...this thing is great for creating a slick top with a headband and using the Voloom to tease the hair below the headband. I tried to create something similar in the "Quick Ideas" video, but since I had already done the layers near my roots I couldn't slick it down to look perfectly sleek. I know for a fact, this iron would be amazing at photoshoots for model's hair to create quick volume.

My biggest surprise is that it didn't knot up my hair. I really thought when I would go to wash it and then brush it out, wet, that it was going to be a bird nest of knots, but it wasn't! My only tip is to be cautious about making the top layer too thin, as if the top layers are smooth and slick, but thin the volumized pieces could decide to make an appearance, which looks a little odd. The volumized sections, alone look like slept in/fuzzed up hair compared to the glisten and shine of the non-volumied layers. I also noticed that the volume was more noticeable with larger sections of hair verses smaller sections.
