It was recently said to me while shooting these photos of my friend Crystal for her new website, that I should use her pictures to do a blog on “full sized photography” because she was happy with how her photos looked.

I love taking pictures of people and helping them to look their best, however I do not want to do crazy photo edits like we see in most fashion magazines. I feel you should be able to recognize a person from their photo, or else it is not a photo, but instead a distorted “art piece.”

I feel that by using angles from an upward area, shooting down, it can be more flattering than when someone points the camera at your waistline and pointing upward. The last thing I want focus on is my waste.

Most people have a tendency to bend down at the knee and point up (like my husband) and really if you at least keep the camera at eye level, THEN tilt downward, it’s usually more flattering and representative of the person.

Another mistake I see a lot, is when people face the camera directly dead center, and arms are hanging down. That only adds bulk and gives no movement to the shot. In the shot of Crystal above, an arm is placed on the hip, the angle is wonky, but I feel it makes you focus on her face.

Crystal is a freelance stylist and makeup artist in Houston, so she wanted her photos to show her make up and hair for her site. Also, she’s a very glammy and fun person, so we didn’t want stiff, from-the-neck-up types of photos.

Choosing a single color of clothing and matching background, it can help features to pop more and the particulars of your measurements to blend together creating blurred lines so that where you exactly end and begin isn’t too pronounced.

Everyone is pretty and fabulous in their own way, and has a strong point to be brought out with photography, and my personal opinion is that the internet is forever, so take the best pictures you can for any of your social media!
