The Decision to Home Bleach

The decision to bleach my hair at home had finally been reached after dreading the monthly appointment at the salon for the last time.

A lot of salons will only use a 30 volume developer, when I really need a 40. If you are careful not to overlap on to previously lightened hair, a 40 should, in theory, be safe on brown hair.

I don’t feel that I can spend four hours in a salon for hair, then another two hours for nails, toes and bikini wax. That’s pretty much an entire day off being stressed out over whether or not my hair will break off from being left on too long or be orange toned from not being left on long enough, and either way it’s a debate as to doesn’t this hairdresser realize that this crap won’t continue processing if it’s DRIED UP? Can’t she reapply it to wet it down? Doesn’t she know if she doesn’t apply ENOUGH it will only be orange? Could you please be more careful about overlapping???

It was too much stress over worrying about whether or not I will be left bald, so I decided to just do it myself!

Not only did all of the above apply in the case of my decision to take my chances with myself...but also, it’s expensive to be me! For this reason, I have placed myself on a pretty regular target beauty budget of $100 per month!

This $100 is for monthly upkeep of nails, toes, waxing :o and hair. I’ve spent years wasting money on intangibles. So I decided to have fun with the prospect of lowering my monthly maintenance!

The last time I paid $175 for a color job, it was terrible! So for years, I’ve gone to a beauty school, where if it turned out badly, I could be mad for less!

I don’t like going to a hairdresser for month after month, yet you never know what the exact price was to be until you were walking out the door. This happened to my friend’s mom. She was sent to a Houston salon by her daughter, to get highlights, lowlights, and a cut and blow out. When she stepped up to the counter to pay...she laughed when the girl told her the bill was $435.

The counter girl wasn’t laughing. It was then that my friend’s mom realized she had been, well, ignorant. She paid her bill, but then went and sat in her car and called her daughter on the phone to scream at her for sending her to this salon! The hair, in case you are wondering, didn’t look like more than a typical $100 job.

Back to me...I try to learn from others. A super expensive hair dresser isn’t going to change my life, so this is a corner I decided to cut. Other than a great haircut here and there, this is an expense I can do without.

I purchased a bucket of Salon Care Quick White lightening powder, Salon Care 40 Volume Crème, Ion Repair Solutions Conditioner...all from Sally’s Beauty Supply. The total cost for those was maybe about $15, however, the amount I bought will last me a year!

I also use a rinse for after shampoo use, in Ultra White Minx by Roux, to keep any hints of yellow out and Biosilk has been a staple of mine for years, ever since I had Farouk from CHI do my hair years ago and try out his soon to be released product out on my hair! It’s perfect to keep hair moist and silky and I usually apply it before blow drying or curling.

While I would never recommend doing a first time all over bleach job on yourself, I now experienced first hand, bleaching all my roots by myself, and it was pretty easy as long as I went slowly, evenly and carefully not to overlap.

Friends have said this week that it came out better than when I go pay to have it done. I am super excited about saving extra money and time by doing this myself from now on!

The main words of advice I have on hair coloring, is that you really need to know your own hair health, and have a pretty good idea of what it can or can’t take in the area of processing!

While I’ve been coloring my hair for years in the past, this was the first time I ever bleached the entire head so it was a very different ball game. Good luck!
