Very excited to be reviewing a Dermalogica product this month, considering this month's blog giveaway is featuring Dermalogica! The Daily Microfoliant was the first product I have received from iFabbo since signing up with them last year. Being on a Macintosh computer and using Safari as my preferred internet browser, I initially had problems logging into the iFabbo system and second I honestly just didn't ever contacted support to be able to sign in to see what products were available. But then last month iFabbo sent me a message via twitter about the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant and I contact support and set out to get it...so here it is! (The log-in problem was Safari, I needed to use Chrome.)

I've only played around with a few Dermalogica products and just discovered two weeks ago that Atlanta has a Dermalogica store at Atlantic Station that looks bright and shinny from the outside, but I didn't have time to stop on the day I discovered it! I didn't do any research on the product before receiving it, as I haven't had time to do anything blog related this month, hence the lack of blog posts for November, *sigh! When it arrived I had no idea what to expect, except that it was a Dermalogica exfoliant product.

Much to my surprise this exfoliant comes in a powder form to mix with water. After completely wasting my first tablespoon of powder, I very carefully dripped a few drops of water and gently mixed it together, then rubbed it onto my face. After using it a few days a week for several weeks I can say I like the product, but I have a few concerns that would tempt me to look at alternatives for a re-purchase.
To state upfront, I normally use the men's Clinique facial scrub, which is very grainy, just to give you an idea of how much abrasion I prefer for my facial exfoliation. I've never had an issue with acne and for daily use, I use a foam cleanser followed by a facial soap lathered into a rough exfoliation glove. I say rough because there are some brands of exfoliation gloves that are soft and will get fuzzy after using them for a month or two. My skin is combination, but definitely getting drier each day I get older.

Normally I take baths, but the first time testing the Dermalogica : Daily Microfoliant I was using a steam shower. My first reservation was even taking the product in the shower with me. I actually left it right outside the door and just bent down and opened the shower door after I had cleansed my face. I feel like it being a powder, the steam would make it like a salt shaker left out in the rain. With the first tablespoon of powder in my hand, I ran it under the shower and completely rinsed it all off. So again, I bent down, opened the door and got another tablespoon, only using drips of water to mix to the desired consistency of a paste. I do give thumbs up that the top is a screw off top and there are only two small tabs for the product to come out.
My first hesitation was with the steam shower, but I then basically had the same fear in the bath. Worried that the bottle was going to slip out of my hands or fall off the side of the tub and drown in the bath water. This happened to me with bath salts and I had a very salty bath one evening, but at least that product was only $25.00. I'd be very, very upset if that happened to a product that was double in price.

Dermalogica : Daily Microfoliant Security Sticker is only on the top of Dermalogica products?! But there isn't one on the bottom of the boxes! I find that odd.

"Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is a unique, rice-based enzyme powder activates upon contact with water, releasing Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes to smooth the skin and accelerate cell renewal. Their unique Skin Brightening Complex of Bearberry, Aspergillus, Grapefruit and Licorice helps to balance uneven skin pigmentation. Active agents derived from Rice Bran and Rice Extract help to regulate melanin production while micro-exfoliating dead cells. A super-soothing blend of Green Tea, Ginkgo and Colloidal Oatmeal calms inflammation, leaving the skin extraordinarily clear and refreshed. Gentle enough to use on a daily basis. Fragrance free. Professional recommendation advised."
Even though I could definitely tell that my face was brighter each time I used the product, the exfoliation aspect was way too gentle for me. But since everyone is different and if you are in the need of a gentle, non-abrasive, non-irritating exfoliator, I would suggest giving this one a whirl. According to the quote above it's the enzymes and salicylic acid that creates the exfoliation, so if you aren't into the grainy texture, this one is a winner for you! It's also very easy to wash off.
The powder is a finely milled loose powder and when mixed with water it feels like a soft milk with a itty bit of grain texture. Obviously a more powder to less water ratio will give you a bit more grain, but not much and if you put too much water you instantly get a watery mess. I received the 2.6 ounce size and the powder filled the bottle up about half way, so don't be expecting the powder to be oozing out the top when you first screw off the lid! The product is fragrance-free but definitely has a scent. To me it smells like rice cakes or cereal, that isn't apparent until you mix it with water. The scent doesn't linger but it is noticeable when using the product.
All in all, I'm pleased with the Dermalogica, Daily Microfoliant as a skin brightener verses an exfoliant product for my face. I do think I'll go to the Dermalogica store to talk to one of their consultants about which products might be more in line with my preferences.
