Whenever a season ends and another one begins, we start to prepare ourselves for change. As the weather cools off and we transition from summer to fall, our wardrobe reflects those changes. We start incorporating more sweaters and jackets and trade in our flip flops and sandals for close-toe shoes. Our dinner menus change from crisp and fresh to warm and hearty. Even the decorations in our house will change. But have you ever thought about adjusting your skin care routine with the changing seasons?
Fluctuations in the weather can be harsh on our skin. The trick to maintaining glowing, healthy skin is to give it what it needs. This means that your skin care regimen should address how the changing weather will affect your skin. Now that summer is finally over, you’ll find your skin drying up more because the weather has cooled down and there’s less humidity in the air. To combat this more arid climate, follow these simple steps:
• Moisturize your lips
With cool weather comes dry lips and who wants to go near that? Cracked lips are definitely not all that. Applying lip balm is key. I recommend one that contains shea butter as it makes your lips soft and moist (and much more kissable)! If you’re wearing lipstick, choose one that also contains a lip balm.
• Hydrate yourself inside and out
One of the most important things you need to remember: hydration, hydration, hydration! We all know that staying hydrated is good for your health, and the benefits are in the look of your skin. So, even if you’re not feeling thirsty, make sure you drink the recommended daily intake of water. In addition, hydrate your skin from the outside by being generous with moisturizers. Be sure to apply moisturizing cream to your face and body right after you bathe and any time your skin feels tight or dry. Keep in mind that scented body lotions often have alcohol in them which can cause skin to dry out, so avoid those products.
• Exfoliate
Even with your summer tan, flaky skin will not look hot. In addition, it can clog your pores and makes your skin look dull, and lifeless. Make sure you scrub away your dead skin once or twice a week to preserve your healthy glow.
• Use sunscreen
Even in cold weather, harmful UV rays can damage your skin. Therefore, applying sunscreen to exposed skin is still important in cooler temperatures if you’re going to be spending time outdoors. One easy way to incorporate applying SPF in your daily routine is to select a moisturizer that contains SPF, killing two birds with one stone. So, for healthy, radiant skin year round, remember to listen to your skin and adjust your regimen accordingly.
