The more I've grown as a beauty blogger, the more I've started opening up to facial scrubs and masks. When Citrus Clear offered to send me a jar of their "Tangerine Tingle" Face Scrub I was excited to try it out, as I honestly turn down a lot of skincare opportunities. First this product can be used as a face scrub or as a mask, which I thought was pretty nifty and the longer you leave it on your face the more tingly it becomes. The tingling action is from the ingredients in the scrub doing two things: (1) removing dead skin cells, and (2) stimulating production in new, fresh skin cells. The scrub contains glycolic acid which exfoliates dead skin cells and keeps pores from clogging along with lemon oil which helps improve and brighten skin complexion.
"Glycolic acid works as an exfoliating agent because of its high acidity but easy solubility. When placed on the skin as part of an exfoliating cream or gel, it goes under the damaged upper layers of skin and destroys the 'glue' which holds dead skin to the surface. As this dead skin is chemically burned off, the other ingredients carry the individual flakes away and a water rinse neutralizes the remaining acid. The result is a much-smoother skin surface and a more youthful appearance. A secondary benefit is the product's ability to draw moisturizers into the newly-exfoliated skin surface. This is why cosmetic counters often sell a complete system of skin care; the rest of the alpha-hydroxy line contains moisturizers and neutralizers to counteract the corrosive actions of glycolic acid." I love the glass jar that the scrub comes in. It's a sturdy jar with waterproof stickers, so the jar won't get all gooey and sticky, with sticker residue if the jar gets wet. Upon first opening the jar, the tangerine fragrance will instantly hit you with its strong scent. The scrub is fairly thick and the consistency reminds me of movie theater nacho cheese after it's cooled. It does have a small grainy texture but overall is fairly smooth and light/airy to the touch. Based on the texture, I didn't think it would be that strong of an exfoliant, but I was very wrong.
I initially used the "Tangerine Tingle" as a mask and within a few seconds of application I could certainly start to feel a tingle, which only did get stronger the longer I left it on. I only left it on for a two minutes as I'm always apprehensive and scared I'll be allergic to new products. My face was a bit red after I took it off, but then I remembered on the website it states that "Some users may experience a slightly reddish appearance after use. This is to be expected from the citrus extracts and glycolics in the scrub. The redness may last for 1-5 minutes, before disappearing into fresh, new skin." Sure enough, the redness went away within a few minutes and my face was noticeably brighter. The mask did not dry out my skin or make it extremely tight feeling. I expected my face to be extra dry from the amount of tingles but it wasn't dry nor was it moisturized so I did follow up with my normal moisturizer. I would also like to note that this product is not a makeup remover, so in order to get the best results, use on a clean face.
The next time I used the "Tangerine Tingle" I used it as a face scrub. It still gives a tingle effect and is a great exfoliating scrub. I normally use a men's exfoliating scrub, but I can say, the "Tangerine Tingle" is a stronger exfoliant, which I thought was almost impossible. I also scrubbed my lips and the tingle reminded me of the tingle that lip plumpers give you. I would not suggest this product for people with sensitive skin, but if you are looking for a super strong exfoliating scrub with an added tingle bonus this is a winner. Again, I could tell my face was brighter after using the "Tangerine Tingle" as a scrub too.
I've continued using the scrub about once. Though the jar is not the biggest, the scrub lasts a long time, since you don't have to use much. The tangerine scent lingers around after you use the scrub, but slowly dissipates in the following several minutes.
