Guest Blogger Post - Spellbound Nails : Reincarnate Old Eyeshadow

I live in a small town, so I order a lot of my beauty supplies online. No matter how well they’re packaged, I sometimes open a box or an envelope to find those supplies broken. Most often, it’s my eyeshadow. The companies are almost always nice enough to reship my order and allow me to keep what’s left of the eyeshadow. This is a great thing in my opinion!

You’re scratching your heads and wondering what could possibly be good about broken eyeshadow right now, aren’t you? Well, let me tell you. I get a brand new eyeshadow to incorporate into my daily makeup routine, and I can now have the colors I love on my fingernails too!

With this post I’m going to show you how you can wear your favorite eyeshadow on your nails also.

You’ll need eyeshadow. This is where you dig through all your old eyeshadow that I just know you’re holding on to even though it’s old, broken, or almost used up. If this eyeshadow is a loose powder that’s perfect. If not, you’ll need a knife, an old credit card … something to crush the eyeshadow into a powder. The eyeshadow I’ll be using is Amethyst from Avon’s Purple Haze Quad. You’ll also need a clear nail polish. Mine is the last of a base/top coat combo polish. It’s a very runny polish that I use to clean my nail art brushes while using them. This is just to show you that you can use any clear polish and still have a great finished product.

If your eyeshadow is a solid shadow like mine, here is where you crush it up. Don’t panic! This eyeshadow will look so much better on your nails than it does forgotten at the bottom of your makeup bag.  I used an old library card and gently cut and crushed my eyeshadow. You want to make sure there are no clumps.

I wanted to be able to use this color again, so I simply added the crushed eyeshadow to the bottle of clear polish. However, you can mix just enough for one manicure in a disposable cup. To create a bottle of new polish use a small funnel or do like I did and fold one end of the paper you crushed the eyeshadow on and carefully push the eyeshadow into the clear polish bottle. Work quickly but gently. You don’t want to spill anything but you also don’t want to give the eyeshadow time to clump. Once the eyeshadow is in the bottle, cap it and shake and roll the bottle between your hands to mix.

Once mixed, let the polish settle to remove any bubbles caused by shaking. Bubbles in the bottle will cause bubbles on your nails. Once settled you can paint your nails as usual. Remember that using a good base coat before applying polish will help prevent staining.

Here is my new shimmery amethyst nail polish. I used two coats of polish and no top coat for this picture. You can see my nails don’t have much of a shine to them. Creating nail polish with eyeshadow will leave the new polish with a slightly dull, matte finish.

Adding a layer of top coat will give life and depth to this manicure. As seen in this picture, I added a coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri. Not only is it an extra shiny, anti-chip top coat but it will help your nails dry much quicker.

I’m a nail artist at heart, so I couldn’t resist spicing up this manicure. Nail art isn't always about big, bold designs. Something as simple as adding glitter or, in the case of this mani, sponging China Glaze's Stone Cold onto the tips of my nails can make any nail special. Don't be afraid to try something new!
